Tyre Pressure and Grip: When Lower Is Not Better

Tyre Pressure and Grip: When Lower Is Not Better

Tyre pressure is a grip dial, not a speed dial. Lower is only better while you still have wheelspin to solve.

Tyre pressure exists to solve one problem: putting power down at the start of the race. It is not a general performance slider, and treating it like one is why so many copied tunes feel slow.

What it is actually doing

Lower pressure buys traction off the line at the cost of efficiency once the car is moving. Higher pressure does the reverse. The correct setting is the lowest pressure that still lets the car roll cleanly after the launch, or the highest pressure your launch can tolerate without spinning — the same point approached from either direction.

A test that works

Run the same launch three times at your current setting and watch the first moments of the race, not the timer. If the car spins, you need more grip. If it hooks up cleanly every time, you have grip to spare and can trade some back for efficiency.

Change pressure alone. If you change final drive in the same session you will not know which dial produced the result.

Car type matters more than the number

High-power, rear-driven cars with narrow tuning windows want grip badly and will punish a pressure setting borrowed from a lighter, more balanced car. All-wheel-drive cars generally launch cleanly with far less help, so they can run settings that would be wasteful elsewhere.

Where players go wrong

  • Copying a pressure figure from a different car and expecting it to transfer.
  • Dropping pressure to the bottom of the range because it is free grip. It is not free; you pay for it after the launch.
  • Judging the change on a single run, when the run-to-run variation from your own launch input is larger than the change you made.

The habit to build

Set grip first, then set final drive, then set nitrous. That order keeps each test meaningful because you are never fixing a launch problem with a top-end dial.
